A long wall finished in pink stucco followed by a water pool for watering the horses is the main frame that welcomes you in this construction built by Luis Barragán, one the most famous Mexican architects and engineers.
Cuadra San Cristóbal, is a private estate encompassing a house, horse stables and auxiliary facilities, located in Los Clubes, a residential enclave adjacent to Las Arboledas, a formerly rural area northeast of Mexico City.
This project was finalized in July 1966 design in collaboration with Barragan’s colleague Andrés Casillas. The intention behind Cuadra San Cristobal was to project the image of country-style living near the city. Conceived under a ranch typology, the architects behind the project sited the residence and horse stables at the edge of a vast walled courtyard composed by a monumental fountain, granary, paddocks and a pasture extending over 2.7 hectares.
Iconic for the functional and aesthetic principles of Modernism, Cuadra San Cristóbal was a key factor in establishing a recognizable identity for the recently built subdivision of Los Clubes. At the same time it shows Barragán’s personal memories and creative interpretation through landscapes and haciendas of rural Mexico.
